Patrick McKenzie is a lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist from Burlington Vermont. He was greatly influenced at an early age by the New York City folk movement of the 1960’s. Specifically, McKenzie cites some of his early inspirations to be Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, and Richie Havens. McKenzie’s early experiences involved playing in a rock band, around 1968. However, as the years went on, he found his true love of music from Ireland and Scotland, as played by: the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, The Dubliners, Silly Wizard, The Corries, Planxty, Mick Maloney, Frank Harte and Christy Moore, as well as North American singer songwriters, Gordon Bok and Stan Rogers. Upon being influenced by this music, he felt led to search for the transatlantic relationship between American "Old Time" music, and the traditional music of Ireland and the British isles. McKenzie’s subsequent travels have led him to not only Ireland, but to West Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, where he has learned of the ballads and music history of each. It is with this knowledge and experience that he interprets the music he sings and performs with Longford Row. |

Matthew Bean, the youngest member of Longford Row, first took up the fiddle at 10 years old. After 2 years he began receiving private lessons. As a member of Mark Sustic’s group of young fiddlers, The Fiddleheads, Bean gained experience playing festivals, fairs, dances, weddings, and many other performances. In high school, he fulfilled the role of assistant concert master in the Essex High School Orchestra. His love of performance and being on stage, combined with a decision to focus on folk and fiddle tunes, led him to attend the Irish music sessions at the Lincoln Inn. It was there that he friended several session musicians, which led to a year filling in as a member of local traditional Irish band, Trinity. Later, Bean was asked to fill in with Longford Row, and eventually became a permanent member of the band.
Bean reads music, as well as plays by ear. Besides the fiddle, Bean plays the mandolin, banjo (tenor 4 string and 5-string), guitar, and is currently working at mastering the concertina. His influences include Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Clancy Brothers, Mick Maloney, Stan Rogers, Sweeney's Men and The Dubliners. Bean currently attends Johnson State College. |
